Maritzburg Golf Club proudly holds the title of South Africa’s oldest playing golf club, established on 24 February 1886. The first official golf competition in the country was played by our members on 14 June 1886, an event captured in the Natal Witness newspaper.

Over 135 years later, MGC remains a cornerstone of Pietermaritzburg’s sporting history - combining a beautiful course, warm community, and rich heritage that continues to define who we are today.

Our History Through the Years

1886–1888 Maritzburg’s first course was established beyond Victoria Bridge - a 12-hole layout where the first official competition was played by G. Adamson.

1889–1910 The second course was located in Alexandra Park and the Parkside area.

1910–1969 The third 18-hole course was situated along Golf Road, near where a section of the University now stands.

1969 Today The club moved to Hayfields. The championship layout, designed by Bob Grimsdell, remains our home course today.

2011 Celebrated 125 years of golf. A commemorative history book was published and a copy placed in the British Golf Museum at St Andrews, Scotland.

Today, Maritzburg Golf Club offers a welcoming environment for golfers of all levels. Our 18-hole par-72 championship course provides a fair yet challenging layout set in scenic surroundings.

Members and visitors enjoy access to a range of facilities including the Pub & Grub, Blooms Nursery & Tea Garden, Squash and Padel Courts, and the Golden Horse Pro Shop.

We continue to grow while preserving the traditions that make our club unique — a place where the past and present meet on every fairway.

Regular Patrols: Security monitors the course, clubhouse, and parking areas throughout the day.
24/7 Protection: The property remains safeguarded after hours for complete peace of mind.

MGC proudly supports youth and community golf development through our partnership with local golfer
Tim Chisale. The program introduces children from surrounding communities to the game - providing
access to coaching, equipment, meals, and mentorship.
